Amusement Parks

In the past, unprecedented numbers of amusement parks in the world were densely built in Japan. Those were running parallel to the rapid economic growth from 1954, and reached its peak in the 1980s. Subsequently, many places were closed down when the bubble economy ended. I thought these structures can be an expression of Japan’s lost decades, which motivated me to choose this subject.

かつて、日本では世界で類を見ないほどの密度で遊園地が建設された。1954年から始まる高度経済成長と並走するように数は増加し、1980年代末にその数はピークに達した。その後、バブル景気終焉と共に多くの遊園地は閉鎖することになる。この作品は、遊具である建造物から日本が辿った時間を視覚化する試みである。
